I was born into the typewriter business. In 1946 my parents purchased Oregon Typewriter, on the corner of SW 5th and Washington in Portland. At the age of twelve I started working with dad cleaning typewriters.

If you were not brought here as a child, what brought you to the area? My wife, Judi, wanted to move “back home.” She was born and raised in Canby.
Profession: I was born into the typewriter business. In 1946 my parents purchased Oregon Typewriter, on the corner of SW 5th and Washington in Portland. At the age of twelve I started working with dad cleaning typewriters. I began selling on the retail floor at age of 15. Then in 1966 my parents retired and sold me the four Oregon stores – we had 95 employees. The secretary/treasurer of our business for 20 years was Inez Scott “Scotty.” Scotty was Dwight D. Eisenhower’s driver in the North African Campaign. Eisenhower had received the title of Commander in Chief of the Allied Expeditionary Force and assumed responsibility for the North African operation.
Other Professions: I served as a traditional Oregon National Guardsman (5 ½ yrs. enlisted and 30 yrs. commissioned). I retired in 1990 at the rank of Colonel.
I was president of two or three small businesses simultaneously for most of my business life.
After enjoying retirement for several years, my wife, Judi, needed help with her real estate business so I obtained my principal broker license and worked with her for 25 years at Coldwell Banker Barbara Sue Seal, followed by REMAX Equity Group.

If offered a dream vacation, where would you go and why? Around the World Cruise, to see the world. A cruise would be because I would need to unpack only one time.
Best lesson learned as a child: Always tell the truth
Defining moment in your life or your greatest accomplishment: My marriage to Judi Wolfer was my defining moment in life, 26 years ago
A memorable dinner: my departing meal as Commandant of the Oregon Military Academy. As a joke, I was served a salad and main course of green peppers, which I cannot stand to smell or eat!
If you could invite anyone past or present, to dinner, who would it be and why:
Donald J Trump. He is the best of the 15-16 presidents I have had in my lifetime. The reason I would invite him to dinner would be to say “thank you.”

Famous person you have met and the circumstances: Ronald Reagan. I was president of a National Trade Association and he was our keynote speaker. I spent three hours with him.
