Canby Library turns the page to fall after record summer reading celebration

Summer reading in Canby was a novel success, with more enchanting events to come this fall.
More than 471 readers attended the Canby Public Library’s End of Summer Reading celebration that marked the final day of the festival literary program on Friday, August 7.
“The End-of-Summer Reading celebration went very well,” said Ember Billingslea, library assistant and teen services coordinator at the Canby Public Library. “Our attendance was … nearly double our attendance last year. Patrons greatly enjoyed the celebration, and we were all very happy that it went so well.”
Billingslea said the celebration included face-painting, a Kona ice truck, balloon animals, games, and goats. The Nigerian Dwarf Goats attended from Goat It Solutions.
This fall, the Canby Public Library has a docket of fun Makers Lab programs on the calendar for kids and teens to participate in games, crafts, and labs with materials provided for borrowing.
These include a Lego lab, 3D pen designs, open art lab, cardboard creations, cemeterrarium, jewelry and key fob making, Minecraft club, and a spooky Halloween activity.
The Lego lab is for ages 4-12. Legos are provided and stay with the library.
The recurring Minecraft Club is for ages 8-15. The library provides a laptop and the game for attendees to borrow, and play together on the library’s server.
The cemetterarium lab attendees will craft spooky terrariums with 3D-printed gravestones, ghosts, and ghouls.
The labs require online registration and waivers, and some, like the cemeterrarium, are for ages 10-18, according to the website.
Billingslea said the library is also slated to host Take and Make Kits for tweens and teens ages 10-18 beginning September 1.
“They will have the option to pick between kits that contain supplies for DIY Lanyards or decorative journals,” Billingslea said.
In October, patrons can look forward to two Nintendo Switch 2 Lounge events.
“Teens can come to the Teen Room to play on our brand new Nintendo Switch 2,” Billingslea said. “We are currently playing Super Mario Party Jamboree and Mario Kart World, but they can make requests for new games to play in the future.”
